This multidisciplinary work is a "comprehensive inventory of policies, institutions, practices, and problems" associated with retirement and finance and is a revised and enlarged edition of the Encyclopedia of Financial Gerontology (Greenwood, 1996).

More than 185 A-Z entries fall within nine core topics--"Advisors, Advice and Support"; "Economic and Income Security"; "Employment, Work and Retirement"; "Family and Intergenerational Issues"; "Financial Investments and Insurance"; "Health Care and Health Coverage"; "Housing and Housing Finance"; "Legal Issues"; and "Quality of Life and Well-Being." Sample entries are Accelerated death benefits, Baby Boomers and retirement, Guardianship, Identify theft, Medicare, Retirement planning, and Widowhood. The signed entries contain see also references, related organizations, suggested readings, and references. see references are used to point the reader from an unused entry to the correct term. Figures and tables are included where appropriate.

Especially helpful are the four appendixes. The first, "Chronological Summary of Post-ERISA Benefit Legislation," starts with the Employment Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 and covers related legislation through 2002. The second appendix is "Major Post-ERISA Benefit Legislation," a list by year of the legislation. The third appendix lists organizations and resources and gives addresses, telephone numbers, and Web addresses. The fourth appendix is "Types of Benefits by Tax Treatment and by Function." A name and subject index completes the encyclopedia.

The entries are very readable and provide excellent insight into the area of retirement and finance. Although this work could be used as a textbook, its major contribution will be as a reference tool, and it will undoubtedly be an extremely useful addition to academic and public libraries. RBB
