Soviet MiG-15 Fagot Model

photo

Soviet MiG-15 Fagot Model

This model of a Soviet MiG-15 Fagot was sponsored by Captain E. Royce Williams, VF-781. In an engagement that threatened to turn the Cold War into a hot one, on 18 November 1952, then-Lieutenant Williams and his wingman, flying F9F-5 Panthers, intercepted 7 Soviet MiG-15's flying on a direct course towards USS ORISKANY off North Korea, and were fired upon by the MiG's. Williams shot down several of the MiG's, and the remainder turned back for Vladivostok. This model was hand built by Michael McLeod for the Cold War Gallery, at Washington Navy Yard.

U.S., Canada Set to Face Off for Gold

[canhockey0226] Associated Press

Canada's Sidney Crosby waits for the puck to be dropped in a face-off against Slovakia.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Another young, fast team outdid a veteran-laden opponent to reach the finals of the Olympic men's hockey tournament Friday, as Team Canada defeated Slovakia 3-2 to set up a rematch with Team USA for gold Sunday.

"The guys are already looking forward to it," Canadian goalie Roberto Luongo said.

The game was much closer and more hard-fought than the U.S.-Finland game earlier in the day that was over in the first 10 minutes. But it followed a similar pattern. Canada, like the U.S., jumped out to an early lead, using its forecheck to bottle up the opposition and let its goalie escape barely tested.

The twist was that the Slovakians pushed Canada much harder, scoring two goals in the final period after the Canadians perhaps started listening to their delirious fans, who with 12 minutes left were already chanting "We want USA!"

Canadian players celebrate after winning their semifinal game against Slovakia.

02canhockey0226

02canhockey0226

Like the Finns, the Slovakians were thinner on talent. That forced them to include older players, some of whom couldn't establish themselves in the National Hockey League or have since left it. Players like Jozef Stumpel (37 years old), Zigmund Palffy (37) and Richard Zednik (34) were once consistent scorers in the NHL but have moved back closer to home for the sunset of their careers. Others, like defenseman Martin Strbak, never made it that far, drinking a cup of coffee in hockey's best league years earlier.

But unlike the Finns and other opponents, the Slovakians still had some top-end talent in their prime, such as one of the best defensemen in the NHL, Zdeno Chara, one of the league's top scorers, Marian Gaborik, and one of the best all-around forwards, Marian Hossa.

They consistently made life difficult for the Canadians, forechecking relentlessly, with Hossa especially effective in pinning the Canadians deep in their end – perhaps a lesson to the U.S. team, which has employed a similar strategy on other teams. Mr. Gaborik was also tricky, occasionally tearing up the left wing and zinging shots on Mr. Luongo.

Canada's strategy for scoring was simple: put pucks on net and screen the Slovakian goalie, Jaroslav Halak, an up-and-coming netminder in the NHL. At 6-foot, Halak isn't an ideal size for netminders in today's hockey. Canada smartly placed forwards in front of him to create screens.

When Mr. Chara was on the ice this didn't work. He easily cleared away the Canadian forwards. But when some of the lesser Slovakian defenders were on the ice they couldn't contain the bulkiest Canadian forwads.

Vote: Best Olympic Reaction

View Interactive

That led to goals early on by Patrick Marleau and Brenden Morrow, with Slovakian defender Lubomir Visnovsky victimized on both. Mr. Visnovsky, a power-play specialist with the Edmonton Oilers, was paired with Mr. Strbak, a big defender but not a great one. They were by far Slovakia's weakest defensive pairing early on.

Canada extended its lead in the third on a goal by Ryan Getzlaf in a goal-mouth scramble. But the Slovakians didn't give up. With Mr. Halak holding down the fort, it was up to two of its lesser lights to bring them within a goal.

First came Mr. Visnovsky, who made use of his rushing skills to charge up the ice and squeeze a backhand shot through a tiny space that Mr. Luongo had left – a goal that the netminder probably would have liked back. Then came a second by Michal Handzus, a big forward with the Los Angeles Kings, who batted in a goal after intense Slovakian pressure with 4:53 left.

But even after Slovakia pulled its goalie, it didn't quite have the firepower to score the equalizer and Canada held on, setting up a rematch with Team USA. Pavol Demitra had a chance to tie in the final seconds but missed an open net.

U.S. forward Patrick Kane said after his team's game that he was almost sorry that the game against Finland ended so quickly because it deprived his team of a chance to further test itself. "That was a great 15 minutes for us but it would have been nice to play a full 60," Mr. Kane said.

That's probably not a regret the Canadians had. The team looked chastened as the game ended and the fans began to chant "We want USA!" some more.

Japanese WWII plane, PNG, 1985

A WW2 Japanese plane wreck in the jungle near Madang, PNG, July 85. (An approximate location).
I just found this info thanks to Wikitravel:
There is a old WWII Japanese airfield (north coast from Madang) which is now pretty much completely covered by Jungle. There is a lot of old plane wreckage and bomb craters still scattered around the place, including a large reasonably well-preserved Mitsubishi 'Betty' Bomber.
And here's a bit more info from PacificWrecks.com :
The Japanese occupied the town and surrounding area on January 1, 1943. During the war, Lt. General Hatazo Adachi, commander of Japanese XVIII Army briefly had his HQ at Madang. Also the 20th and 41 Division of the Japanese Army were stationed in Madang.
There are some interesting WWII sites in Madang and along the North Coast Road and in Alexishafen. These bases were bypassed by American forces, and not invaded until much later when Australian 15 and 21 Brigades and 7th Division recaptured Madang on April 25, 1944, and Alexishafen on April 26, 1944. The coastal waters around this area of the north coast contain several shipwrecks and sunken planes.

Hungary, Poland Aid Borrowers Hurt by Franc's Rise

BUDAPEST—Hungary accelerated efforts Friday to aid local borrowers squeezed by the sharp rise in the value of the Swiss franc in recent years, even as authorities in Bern sought to check further gains by the safe-haven Alpine currency amid this week's global market turmoil.

Starting next month, Hungarians with foreign-currency loans will be able to participate in a repayment program that for three years will fix the exchange rate applied to their outstanding debts at a level far below the prevailing market rates for the Swiss franc and the euro.

The appreciation of the Swiss franc has placed enormous financial pressure on households across Hungary, Poland and Croatia that took out Swiss-franc loans in the middle of the last decade because they had far lower interest rates than loans in their domestic currencies.

These debt woes have acted as a brake on national economic growth, dragging on consumer confidence and spending, and pushing governments to act. Poland this week also enacted legislation aimed at easing pressure on foreign-currency borrowers.

"If this continues, the hit to consumption could be quite high" in Hungary and Poland, said Neil Shearing, senior emerging-markets economist at Capital Economics in London. "The only real way out of this is for the Swiss franc to depreciate, and we don't see that happening soon."

Hungary's plan, which offers more help to borrowers than the measure adopted by Warsaw, could help cushion some of the blow here in the short term, Mr. Shearing said. But even Budapest's moves are effectively just pushing households' debt problems further down the road.

Borrowers who participate can make monthly loan payments at a rate of 180 Hungarian forints for 1 Swiss franc, or 250 forints for 1 euro. The franc was trading at about 248 forints on Friday, while the euro was trading at around 272 forints.

The difference between what is paid at the fixed rate and what is owed at the actual rate will be turned into a separate forint-denominated loan that must be repaid, with interest, starting 36 months after a borrower enters the program.

Authorities said Friday that borrowers would be able to start paying lower installments from September, one month earlier than originally planned when the program was approved in May. Borrowers whose loans are less than 90 days overdue are eligible to participate. They must apply for the program by Dec. 31.

"The aim of this scheme is to smooth out extreme foreign-currency rate moves, similar to those we've seen in August," said Roland Natran, state secretary of Hungary's Economy Ministry. Mr. Natran said the arrangement would also help banks by reducing the risk of defaults by borrowers.

Capital Economics estimates that Swiss franc-denominated debt is equivalent to between 15% and 20% of Hungarian gross domestic product, while in Poland and Croatia, Swiss-franc loans amount to roughly 10% of GDP. Most of that is in the form of mortgage loans held by households.

Crosby Sends Canada to Gold

VANCOUVER, British Columbia—Canada pulled out a sudden-death victory in men's ice hockey Sunday, earning the one of its record 14 gold medals that matters most to this hockey-mad nation of 34 million.

After a spirited U.S. team clawed back from a 2-0 deficit, Canada's best-known player, Sidney Crosby, scored the winning goal on a pass from Jarome Iginla, one of the few holdovers from Canada's last gold-medal team, from 2002. Mr. Crosby threw his mouth guard, gloves and stick into the air and his teammates piled on him in joy. The final score was 3-2.

Sidney Crosby takes the game-winning shot for goal over U.S. goalie Ryan Miller.

hockeygold0228_

hockeygold0228_

To the side stood the U.S. team, one of the youngest and most surprising of the tournament. They won the silver—far better than most had predicted two weeks ago—but again failed to beat Canada in a gold-medal game, having lost in 2002 too.

After the game, while his jubilant countrymen screamed and waved huge Canadian flags in the stands, Mr. Crosby said, "It doesn't even feel real. It feels like a dream."

The victory sealed what for Canada was an emotional Olympics, embraced across the vast nation in a way few Olympics are. At first, the Games were marred by the death of a Georgian luge athlete and then by Canada's stumbling out of the gate, casting doubts that its vaunted plans to win medals would pan out.

But the local fans remained faithful and, by the second week, when the Canadian medals began to pile up, they were exuberant. Norway and the Soviet Union previously shared the record for gold medals in the Winter Games, 13.

Fans across Canada celebrated Sunday's hockey victory wildly, with the streets of major cities thronged with cars honking and crowds shouting. In Vancouver, which was transformed from a sleepy-chic city on the Pacific to the country's emotional capital for 17 days, fans paralyzed the downtown as they flowed out of bars and restaurants onto the rainy streets.

In the arena, fans applauded the U.S. team, especially its star goalie, Ryan Miller, who finished the tournament with the best goals-against average of any goalie and was a key reason for the Americans' surprising run to the gold-medal game. The team lost just one game in the tournament—Sunday's—and had beaten Canada, 5-3, in a preliminary round.

The team's silver medal bore out the strategy of U.S. general manager Brian Burke. He resisted the temptation to recruit the most talented, highest-paid players America had to offer. Instead, he selected players he thought would embrace the very different form of hockey played at the Olympics—a game with a simplified playbook often won by the team that can skate the hardest the longest.

"We started a new trend with USA hockey," the goalie, Mr. Miller, said after the game. "We felt like we deserved to be in that position."

Canada took the harder road to the final. After lashing perennial weakling Norway, 8-0, Canada needed to shootout to eke out a 3-2 victory over a surprisingly tough Swiss team.

Then it hit its biggest stumble with the loss to the U.S. But it scored decisive wins over Germany and a touted Russia squad, then it hung on against Slovakia to make Sunday's final.

The U.S. team almost scored first on Sunday. Midway through the first period, the Americans slipped the puck under Canada goalie Roberto Luongo, where it rested on the goal line. Later that period, Canada's Jonathan Toews rifled in a rebound of a Mike Richards shot to make it 1-0. Then Corey Perry made it 2-0 on a broken play in the U.S. zone, and things began to look bleak for the Americans.

But Team USA rebounded with a goal to make it 2-1, then silenced the partisan crowd with a scrappy goal by Zach Parise within the last 30 seconds that sent the game into overtime.

Nearly eight minutes into OT, Mr. Crosby forced the puck into a U.S. corner. A Team USA clearing attempt failed, and Mr. Iginla sent a quick pass to Mr. Crosby, who snapped the puck between Mr. Miller's legs.

Canada exhaled. As defenseman Duncan Keith put it, "It's as much a relief as it is excitement."

You heard it in the middle innings and then again in the eighth when the Mets were coming back against the San Diego bullpen just the way they had on Monday night when 8-4 the wrong way became a 9-8 walk-off for the home team.

This time a 4-2 hole turned into a 5-4 victory after Angel Pagan knocked one out of the park to lead off the inning, Nick Evans came off the bench to crack a sacrifice fly to tie it and Ruben Tejada worked a full count, bases-loaded walk to bring home David Wright with run that would win it.

And what you heard was a sound from yesteryear, a sound made famous in the old place across the parking lot but one that had largely been lost to ennui, disgust and distracting exhortations on the scoreboard over the last three seasons.

FIRED UP: Catcher Ronny Paulino celebrates with closer Jason Isringhausen after the Mets’ come-from-behind, 5-4 win over the Padres last night at Citi Field.

It was, quite simply, a spontaneous chant of “Let’s Go Mets . . . Let’s Go Mets . . . Let’s Go Mets . . .,” and it came out of the stands at CitiField as it had on Monday, as it had during Saturday night’s victory over the Braves.

You know what that tells you?

The fans haven’t given up any more than their team has.

You know what else that tells you?

These fans like the Mets.

They really like them.

The lineup is loaded with the equivalent of seat-fillers, guys who are taking the projected regulars’ spots in the lineup much as individuals are hired at televised award shows like the Oscars to fill the seats of stars who vacate them when other duties call.

Guys like Tejada, here because Jose Reyes, the NL’s leading hitter at .336, isn’t. Guys like Evans, here because Daniel Murphy, the NL’s fifth-leading hitter at .320, isn’t.

But these Mets are turning woe into whoa! They are turning heads, refusing to go away no matter how many of them have left and gone away, hey, hey, hey, through trades or trips to the disabled list.

“I don’t know why anyone would have thought our team would throw in the towel or give up,” Justin Turner told The Post. “That’s kind of a slap in the face to the guys who are here.

“Players get traded and players get hurt. That’s part of baseball. We’ve got 25 guys in here busting their butts to try to win games and who believe in ourselves and our team.”

The twin tracks of the present and future are converging. This isn’t a team stocked with embittered veterans playing out the string. The more the young guys contribute, the more the Mets win, the more the young guys solidify themselves.

“The young guys have a hunger to open people’s eyes and prove they belong,” Pagan told The Post. “The type of attitude we have is to take adversity and turn it into opportunity.

“We’ve lost some key players, but we still have a job to do and that job is to win games. One of the keys to our success is being a hungry team.”

The combination of hunger and commitment to doing things the right way — such as cleanup hitter Lucas Duda successfully laying down his first big league bunt to move the tying run to third and the winning run to second in the eighth — has made life a little easier for manager Terry Collins.

“I’ve never had a team where so many guys are playing for a position for next year as we have here,” Collins said. “I wish I could tell you how many times I’ve seen good [Triple-A] players who were dying for the opportunity to play in the big leagues, just dying for it, and never really got the chance to prove themselves.

“Here, these guys have the opportunity, and they’re stepping up.”

The Mets have stepped up to 58-57. Young guys are making their mark.

“If you have success as a team, you’re going to be successful as individuals,” Turner said. “If a team wins, a lot of people get rewarded.”

Including the fans who are ready to chant, “Let’s Go Mets” when they like what they see.

Ohno Wins Another Medal

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – It was lucky number eight for American Apolo Anton Ohno, who broke his own record Winter Olympic medal haul on Friday night with a bronze in the 5,000 meter short track relay.

Bronze medalist Apolo Ohno holds up eight fingers to signify his tally of Olympic medals.

For the most decorated American Winter Olympian ever, an eighth medal could be a perfect career cap. Mr. Ohno skates with the number eight on his boots, and started a nutritional supplement company called Eight Zone.

During the medal ceremony, he formed the number eight with his fingers for the cameras. "This has been quite the epic journey," he said.

Canada took the gold in a clean race that had an unusual five teams, instead of four, on the track simultaneously. Korea won silver. Less than 0.3 seconds separated the first and third.

The U.S. team's bronze-medal win gives the U.S. 34 medals in hand, with two more assured in men's ice hockey and men's long-track team pursuit. That gives Team USA no less than 36 medals for these Games -- equaling the record for most medals won by a single nation at an Olympic Winter Games, which was set by Germany in Salt Lake City.

The U.S. was a dark horse in the short track relay, since Mr. Ohno had long been considered the team's only world-class skater. But Mr. Ohno was helped in the relay by the emergence of a new American star, 19-year-old J.R. Celski.

The U.S. team had been behind much of the race, but a final shove by Mr. Celski pushed Mr. Ohno – and the team -- into third place. "Right when I did that, I knew he could handle business from there," said Mr. Celski, who won two bronze medals in Vancouver.

He downplayed comparisons between himself and Mr. Ohno. "I don't feel that any torch is being passed off. I was just happy to be out here and have fun," he said.

With his three-medal haul in Vancouver, the 27-year-old Mr. Ohno proved he was not too old to compete seriously. "I'm in the best shape of my life. I feel the best I've ever skated," he said.

Earlier on Friday, he nearly came in second in the 500 meter race, but was disqualified after bumping into Canadian Francois-Louis Tremblay in the final seconds of the race.

"I had so much speed. I put my hand up to not run into the Canadian in front of me. I guess the judge saw something we didn't see," he said. "In this sport, I learned over many years and through life in general that you only have control over certain things."

These Games may mark the end of the road for Mr. Ohno's speed skating career. In addition to his company, he is also a TV star off the ice through appearances on shows such as "Dancing With The Stars."

Following Friday night's relay, he wasn't ready to discuss what's next. "I'm not thinking anything past tomorrow," he said. Asked whether he would retire, he responded, "It's too early to say."

"I never say never. This sport has been so good to me. But I will tell you I would definitely take a long break – a needed one."
