Ben Howland concerned that UCLA players let opposing fans get inside their heads

Malcolm Lee, Ben Howland

UCLA Coach Ben Howland calls instructions to his team during the second half of Pac-10 game against Oregon in Eugene. (Chris Pietsch / Associated Press / January 15, 2011)

Reporting from Tempe, Ariz. —

UCLA might want to add ear plugs to its travel checklist the next time it hits the road.

The Bruins continue to have problems tuning out opposing fans, their latest issues surfacing Thursday night during an 85-74 loss to Arizona. UCLA Coach Ben Howland said several players responded to what he called inappropriate remarks made by Wildcats fans.

"All they're trying to do is to get you to react to it, so it's actually serving what someone in the crowd tries to do," Howland said Friday. "It happened to more than one of our players, which is really unfortunate.

Save on daily L.A. Times deals powered by Groupon.

"At this point in the season you'd think you'd be over that by now."

Howland called the comments from the crowd of 14,258 "some personal things directed at certain kids you would think would be inappropriate in some circles." Students taunted Reeves Nelson after the Bruins forward fouled out late in the game, calling out every step he took before yelling "Sit down!" as Nelson plopped down on the bench.

Nelson responded by repeatedly rising from his chair and then sitting back down, triggering a devilish smile on his face.

"I always get a kick out of whatever they try to do with their little chants," Nelson said after the game. "I was just messing with them a little bit."

Howland, whose team plays at Arizona State on Saturday, was not amused.

"It's a little kid's thing and he's reacting to that," Howland said. "It's like, come on. We're losing, just sit down and don't react to the crowd. . . . That's really immature."

It wasn't the first time UCLA has had issues with hostile fans. Freshman center Joshua Smith extended his middle finger to USC fans earlier this month in response to an insult. Smith acknowledged he was rattled again Thursday.

"We let little things get in our head, let the crowd get in our head, let the refs get in our head," Smith said. "We didn't play the right way."

Clowns, Naked Ladies and Plenty of Beer

[SP_PARTY] Geoffrey A. Fowler

Lululemon party at Club Bud

VANCOUVER, British Columbia—There were parties galore at the Winter Games, from intimate corporate shindigs to flashy red-carpet affairs. By far the most exclusive one happened on the rink at Canada Hockey Place, where the Canadian women's hockey team celebrated on the ice—with beer and cigars—after their gold-medal win over the U.S. on Thursday.

Over the past two weeks, Wall Street Journal reporters scattered to sample the best—and most Canadian—of parties. One constant: beer. The luckiest parties lured "The Great One," Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.

WSJ's Jessica Marmor talks with Olympic silver medalists Katherine Reutter and Charlie White, and freestyle skier Scotty Bahrke, at the Club Bud Lululemon party in Vancouver.

Here's how we judged them, on a scale of one maple leaf (a dud) to four (a bash):

Club Bud Lululemon

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf3_A]

This star-studded nightclub boasted a red carpet and bumping dance floor. Countless athletes stopped by, including ice-dancing gold-medal winners Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, plus the rock group Barenaked Ladies. Food: Budweiser and more Budweiser.

Sochi World

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf3_A]

Downstairs had exhibits on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. Upstairs, clowns cavorted and guests taste-tested five varieties of vodka. VIPs included Prince Albert of Monaco and—best of all—Mr. Gretzky.

Irish House

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf1_A]

Americans aren't the only ones who reduce Irish culture to beer and bagpipes. No celebrities showed up when we were there—not even an Irish athlete on this particular night, though, to be fair, Ireland has only six competitors here. Molson and Guinness on tap, but not a Canadian—or Irish—delicacy in sight.

Molson Canadian Hockey House

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf2_A]

A Canadian frat party multiplied by 10. Plenty of celebrities showed up, including Mr. Gretzky and hockey stars Grant Fuhr and Lanny McDonald. Comedian Seth Meyers, rock god Bryan Adams and actor Donald Sutherland also were there. No surprises on the buffet: Canadian beer, cheese and wine.

Holland Heineken House

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf3_A]

Part Disneyland, part beer garden, part high-school gym. When speed skating was on, the place filled up with orange-clad mobs hoping for another Dutch medal. The Dutch royal family, Dutch athletes and Dutch artists ate potato-sauerkraut "hotchpotches," which turned out to be mashed potatoes with a hot dog. Tasty anyway.

Alberta Train

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf3_A]

Ritzy passenger cars with glass-roofed upper decks. Most cars were leased to corporations for private schmoozing on this three-hour Vancouver-to-Whistler trip. A bevy of Albertan officials rode the train, feasting on "mountain pass pancakes" made with Aprikat beer.

Omega Party

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf1_A]

A luxury party for a luxury brand that could have been held at an Applebee's. Pretty dull unless you like journalists.

Rep. Ryan Is GOP Point Man

When Rep. Paul Ryan delivers the Republican response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday, many viewers will get their first look at a man whom GOP leaders are trusting to manage a central policy issue—how to cut the federal budget—that could shape the party's image for years.

While unknown to most Americans, Mr. Ryan, 40 years old, has established himself as a leading conservative thinker on federal spending, shaped in part by his early work for supply-side icon Jack Kemp.

View Full Image

RYAN

Bloomberg News

Rep. Paul Ryan spoke on Jan. 6 about GOP promises to cut spending.

RYAN

RYAN

Now, Republicans not only have made Mr. Ryan chairman of the House Budget Committee, but on Tuesday the House is expected to vote to give him unprecedented powers to force spending cuts for the current fiscal year. That authority will allow Mr. Ryan to act unilaterally in setting an overall spending level for the rest of the year, a job usually handled by his full panel.

Hours later, Mr. Ryan will speak to the nation in a televised address following Mr. Obama's remarks to a joint session of Congress. He was chosen for the role by House Speaker John Boehner and Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell.

In elevating Mr. Ryan, Republican leaders are taking what Democrats believe is a political risk. He has written an anti-deficit plan that includes politically explosive ideas—replacing Medicare with vouchers and allowing some workers to invest Social Security taxes in private accounts—that go beyond what even many Republicans are prepared to embrace.

But conservatives counter that the 2010 election outcome showed he is precisely the kind of political figure to put forth as the face of the Republican Party.

"If I was starting a football team in a national budget league, I'd pick Paul Ryan as the captain and quarterback," said Rep. Dan Lungren (R., Calif.), an ally of the late Mr. Kemp. "There's nobody in this House who's taken as serious a long-term view on the budget as Paul Ryan."

Democrats delight in spotlighting his controversial proposals and daring other Republicans to embrace them.

Journal Community

"Up until this point, the Republican leadership has been vague about what federal programs they want to cut," said Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent who caucuses with Democrats. "On the other hand, Congressman Ryan has been very clear on this subject."

Delivering the party's response to the president is an honor but by no means a ticket to stardom. Most such addresses aren't memorable, though Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal drew wide attention in 2009, when his response to Mr. Obama's first address to Congress was widely panned.

In Washington, Mr. Ryan's speech will be closely watched not only because of his central role in the fight over federal spending. He also is seen as having higher political ambitions: Mr. Ryan is considered a possible candidate for the Senate in 2012 if Wisconsin Democrat Herb Kohl doesn't run for re-election.

For now, Mr. Ryan's platform is the hearing room of the House Budget Committee, from which he will broadcast his remarks Tuesday night. Republicans picked the venue to help draw a sharp contrast with Mr. Obama, who is expected to argue both for deficit reduction and for new government spending in areas such as education and infrastructure that he considers "investments" in economic growth.

In the past year, Mr. Ryan has gone toe-to-toe with Mr. Obama in high-profile venues. When the president a year ago addressed a conference of House Republicans in Baltimore, he called attention to Mr. Ryan's "roadmap" and jousted with him over the plan's details and implications. A month later, at a televised bipartisan summit on Mr. Obama's health-care legislation, Mr. Ryan delivered a stinging critique of the bill to the president's face.

At a time when his party has been swept to power in the House by anti-Washington feelings and the tea party, Mr. Ryan is an intellectual who has spent scant time working outside the Washington Beltway. He supported the Wall Street bailout that was a big spark behind the tea-party rebellion.

Born in Janesville, Wis., Mr. Ryan went straight to Capitol Hill after college to work on the staff of his home-state senator, Republican Bob Kasten. After Mr. Kasten lost his re-election bid in 1992, Mr. Ryan went to work at Empower America, a Washington think tank, where he wrote speeches for Mr. Kemp and conservative thinker Bill Bennett.

He worked as a marketing consultant for his family earth-moving business for a couple of years, then returned to Capitol Hill to work for conservative Sam Brownback, who at the time was in the House.

Mr. Ryan, who won an open seat in Congress in 1998, lives in his hometown with his wife, Janna, and three young children. When asked about speculation that he may run for president, Mr. Ryan has been known to respond: "My head isn't big enough, and my kids are too small."

Turkey Surprises With Rate Cut

ISTANBUL—One day after Brazil and Poland raised their key interest rates, Turkey's central bank on Thursday took the opposite tack and cut, underlining the different strategies that emerging market policymakers are taking as they grapple with rapid growth and volatile investment flows.

New Europe

Complete Coverage: More Turkey news, analysis

The Turkish central bank cut its policy interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to a record low of 6.25%, surprising markets which had expected the bank to sit tight after cutting the rate by half a percentage point last month.

The Turkish lira fell 2.3% to $1.584 after the bank's decision Thursday.

Despite Turkey's near 8% growth forecast for in 2010, the bank has embarked on a complex policy of cutting interest rates—to curb the inflow of speculative investment—while raising reserve requirements for commercial banks to rein in an expanding consumer credit boom.

The Turkish move appeared to be in stark contrast to other emerging markets, which have started raising their key interest rates to head off inflationary pressures, while dampening consumer demand.

The central banks are effectively choosing different ways to tighten monetary policy, analysts say. That's because the scale of the increased reserve requirements that Turkey is implementing—with more expected Friday—mean that overall, Turkey's central bank is actually tightening monetary policy.

"The decisions show monetary policy is tightening in increasingly different ways across the emerging markets," said Neil Shearing, emerging markets economist at Capital Economics in London. "Turkey has been creative while Brazil has been more traditional; it's all a question of managing inflation and inflows of capital."

On Wednesday, Brazil raised its benchmark rate 50 basis points to 11.25%, and said that would likely mark the beginning of a new cycle of monetary tightening. Poland's central bank governor Marek Belka said more cuts would follow his bank's 25 basis point rise to 3.75% on Wednesday.

And in Russia, First Deputy Central Bank Chairman Alexei Ulyukayev on Thursday said he now sees inflation as a higher risk than slowing growth, raising the odds that the Russian central bank will raise interest rates next week, too.

Brazil and Poland are reacting to rising price pressures and inflation rates already above their central bank targets.

Turkey, by contrast, appears to have chosen its mix of apparently conflicting tools because it is less threatened by inflation than it is by an inundation of speculative investment flows that are financing a ballooning current account deficit—a mismatch of imports and exports that has led to the Turkish economy's undoing in the past. Inflation is currently at a record low of 6.4% year-on-year in December.

Low interest rates in major economies such as the U.S., the U.K. and the euro zone have pushed investors to search for higher returns elsewhere in the past year, sending capital flooding into fast-growing emerging markets like Turkey. These money flows tend to pump up asset prices but threaten to dry up quickly due to their short term nature if risk sentiments shift, potentially triggering a crisis in their wake.

Turkey's economy is particularly exposed to these speculative inflows, which finance a rising proportion of its mushrooming current account deficit. That deficit more than tripled in November versus a year ago to a hit a fresh record of $5.9 billion as imports outpaced exports by a factor of ten, according to Turkey's official statistics agency Turkstat.

Turkish policymakers insisted Thursday that "additional measures" would be taken to limit credit expansion, stressing that: "The net effect of the measures which have been taken or are envisaged under the new policy is tightening."

World Cup 2022: Fifa on the defensive over calendar changes

Fifa has been forced onto the defensive over its plans for the international fixture calendar following reports that Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini have begun work on a new calendar that would see European club football played between March and October to accommodate international qualifying matches and finals tournaments in winter.

Fifa: no plans for winter World Cup in Qatar

By Paul Kelso 1:40PM GMT 20 Jan 2011

Paul's Twitter

According to German newspaper Bild the proposed changes prompted by potential of a winter World Cup in Qatar in 2022, would create two windows in the winter for international qualifiers and European Championships or World Cup tournaments.

The schedule, which echoes that prepared by Platini in 1998 when he acted as Blatter’s adviser, would see club football played from March to October, with all euro or World Cup qualifying matches played as mini-tournaments in November and December, and the final tournaments in January and February.

The newspaper said that the new schedule could be introduced as early as 2015, though this would raise an obvious question about the viability of playing the 2018 World Cup in a Russian winter. Bild said Platini and Blatter had hoped to keep it under wraps until after both men had been re-elected as president of Uefa and Fifa respectively.

The proposal, designed to boost the status and quality of the international game and ensure players were not fatigued, would see football trespass on territory reserved for traditional summer sports, as well as summer and winter Olympics.

In response to the story Fifa did not deny that calendar issues were being considered, but said it had "no concrete plans" to make the changes. In a statement released to the Daily Telegraph Fifa said: “At this stage there are no concrete plans to change the international match calendar.

“Any potential move of the 2022 FIFA World Cup from a summer to a winter period would have to be initiated by the football association of Qatar and would have to be presented to the FIFA Executive Committee.”

Day 11 // View From The Spit

photo

Day 11 // View From The Spit

An overcast afternoon called for a walk from Fingal Beach across the Fingal Spit, only accessible at low tide. Two stunning beaches connecting to form a land bridge accessible for those up for the walk - and why wouldn't you.

Aboiut Fingal Bay (from Wikipedia)

Fingal Bay is approximately 1.75 km (1.1 mi) across at its widest point and 1.3 km (0.8 mi) from the mouth to the beach. The northeastern head of the bay is the Fingal headland, which is connected to the mainland via Fingal Spit, a sand spit approximately 900 m (2,953 ft) long. Waters to the northeast of the spit are known as "Fly Roads". Crossing between the mainland and the headland along the spit is considered dangerous. According to a sign on the beach, people have died crossing the spit, which can be covered by breaking waves at times. The south-western head of the bay is Fingal Head, which is located southeast of the town. Between the two heads, the mouth is over 1 km (0.6 mi) wide. The bay includes a sandy beach approximately 1.9 km (1.2 mi) long.
